The Various Treatments for Autism : What Works and What Does Not

There is at present no one standard treatment protocol for autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Various Treatments for Autism are available there, but many people with ASD get an advantage from treatment, irrespective of their age and diagnosis time. People of all age groups, at all levels of ability, can often improve after adequate interventions.

But there are many methods to minimize the symptoms and maximize abilities. People who have ASD have the best opportunities of using all of their abilities and skills if they receive appropriate therapies and interventions.

The most effective therapies and interventions usually differ for each person. However, most people with ASD get benefit from highly structured and specialized programs.

In some cases, treatment can greatly decrease symptoms and help people with autism in daily activities.

Study shows that early diagnosis and interventions, such as during preschool or before, are more likely to have a major positive impact on symptoms and later skills.

There will be an overlap in symptoms between ASD and other disorders, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it’s important that treatment focus on a child’s specific requirements, rather than the diagnosis.

The following are the types of treatment for ASD.

Applied Behaviour Analysis(ABA)-Applied It is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior modification. It depends on

  • How behavior is working
  • How behavior is changed by the environment
  • How learning occurs

ABA therapy applies our knowledge of how behavior works to actual situations. The aim is to increase useful behaviors and decrease behaviors that are not useful in learning.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

It is a psychotherapy that combines cognitive therapy with behavior therapy by identifying wrong/unwanted patterns of thinking, emotional response, or behavior and replacing them with desirable patterns of thinking, emotional response, or behavior.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)
